Why is celebrated Santiago Apostle in Spain?

Spanish city Santiago de Compostela celebrates today, July 25, the festivity of Santiago Apostle (James the Apostle), patron saint of Spain and Galicia, and also official festival in many Spanish regions and others areas of the world.

Tradition tells of James Zebedee’s, named The Great and one of the twelve Apostles of Jesus Christ, stay in Spain for evangelizing the area of Roman Empire. Tradition tells Saint arrived to Roman Baetica and he walked until arriving to Iria- Flavia, in Galicia.

Also, tradition tells its body was transported to Spain, to city of Santiago de Compostela, and after came back to Jerusalem and to be decapitated.

Under the reign of Philip IV, Pope Urban VII ruled in 1630 Santiago Apostle, The Great, should be only one patron saint of the Spanish country.

Thus,Santiago de Compostela became area of veneration for Christianity and aim of many pilgrimages from many places throughout the world.

In fact, each July 25, Catholicism emphasizes the value of the iconographic representation of the apostle with the cane of pilgrim in his hand on the path of faith.

People from Galicia, in honour of the saint, each July from 15 to 31, celebrate the festivity of the Apostle, where stand out fireworks show on 24, Galicia Day, at Plaza del Obradoiro.

Also, it’s celebrated on 25 Holy Mass at Cathedral of Santiago with the traditional offering to Apostle by a member or delegate from Royal House.

Besides, when July 25 is Sunday, it’s celebrated Holy Year of Compostela.
