A GENERAL STRIKE AND A PITCHED BATTLE DURING DEBATE OF PENSIONS IN ARGENTINA

Buenos Aires / On Monday, a general strike called by the largest trade union in Argentina and a pitched battle around the Parliament, with dozens of wounded and at least 60 detainees, have stolen limelight from the tense debate in the controversial reform of the pension system that are promoted by the Government of Mauricio Macri.

After the failed attempt to push through the law last week, also in the midst of violent protests, the ruling party has achieved a quorum to begin the discussion of the bill in the Chamber of Debate.

In parallel, a rain of stones against the police, followed by the demolition of part of the extensive fence around the palace of Congress, were the first incidents to which the police responded with shots of rubber bullets and tear gas.

Within the Congress, the deputies have already initiated the substantive debate of the project with the memory of the violent days that took place on December 19 and 20, 2001, in which there were about thirty deaths and marked the end of Fernando de la Rua’s  presidency.

The reform that seeks to modify the formula to calculate the increases in retirement payments, which will allow retirees to earn more in 2018, according to the Government.

However, the opposition, trade unions and various human rights organizations denounce that the change constitutes a reduction in the income of retirees.

Eleven of the 24 governors of Argentina met with officials of the Executive to show their support for the reform, despite the strong social rejection.

For his part, Mauricio Macri, who has just completed his second year in the Presidency, has not spoken at the moment about the violent events on Monday.
