CALDERÓN DE LA BARCA WITH “CELOS AÚN DEL AIRE MATAN” IN MOSCOW

Moscow / Natalia Sats Theater in Moscow premiered on November 8 the Baroque opera “Celos aún del aire matan”, with a libretto by the Golden Age playwright Calderón de la Barca.

“Celos aún del aire matan” is the first full preserved opera in the lyrical history of Spain, but it has been staged rarely in the world.

Written on the occasion of the wedding of Maria Theresa of Habsburg – daughter of Philip IV – with the future King Louis XIV of France, intended to warn the future queen about the destructive power of jealousy, in the key of parody.

The libretto staged in Moscow has had the music by Juan Hidalgo de Polanco, one of the most prestigious composers of the Spanish baroque music of the second half of the seventeenth century.

It is a “rarity”, according to Georgy Isaakyan, director of the Sats theater and author of a staging with expressive means typical of contemporary theater for a sophisticated allegorical argument because, in his opinion, “to the spectator of today it is necessary to speak to you in today’s language.”

The virtuoso British musician, Andrew Lawrence-King, one of the great world specialists in ancient music, moved to Moscow to direct and play the harp in the first two performances of the opera, which will go to swell the fixed repertoire of the theater Russian.

“Jealous of the air still kill” is a fusion of the choirs and dance of the low Renaissance, of the traditional scenic representations for the carnivals, of the Baroque dramatic opera, of ancient guitars, harps and tiorbas, as well as of authentic flamenco dance, interpreted by Juan Aguierre and Yulia Belova.

One of the few recoveries of “Celos aún del aire matan” was made in 2000 at the Teatro Real in Madrid, and the concert version came a year later at the Auditori in Barcelona. Outside Spain, also as a concert and directed by Lawrence-King, was performed at the Festival of Sheffield (United Kingdom), in 2003.

In the version released in Moscow, with Calderón‘s libretto translated into Russian by Katerina Antonenko and adapted by Lawrence-King, the core of the music is a small set of baroque guitars accompanied by other instruments of the small orchestra. (November 16, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
