CENTENARY OF THE PAINTER GUSTAV KLIMT

Vienna / This year, Austria remembers the centenary of the death of Gustav Klimt, probably his most famous artist, author of “The Kiss”, who died on February 6, 1918 at 55 years of age.

Gustav Klimt left a work which evolved from an initial historicism to the threshold of expressionism, and an artistic movement, the Secession, which meant a break with modernity.

The calendar of celebrations with exhibitions with the work by the painter who, in his golden age, portrayed Adele Bloch-Bauer I, patron of Viennese art, started on January 18 at the Leopold Museum with “Vienna around 1900”, in the one that remembers the artistic dynamism that was lived in the then imperial capital.

Portrait of Adele Bloch-Bauer by Klimt, considered one of the masterpieces of universal painting, was plundered by the Nazis into the Jewish industrialist, and ended up in the Belvedere Museum in the Austrian capital, and turned to its descendants in 2006 after a long legal battle, along with four more pieces.

In June 2006, “The woman in gold” became for some months the most expensive painting in the world to be sold for 106.7 million euros (136 million dollars).

Years later, the story of the family recovery of the painting by Maria Altmann, Adele’s niece, was starred in the cinema by Helen Mirren in a film that premiered in Spain with the title of “Woman in gold”.

If there is a museum in the world that can be considered Klimt’s home that is the Belvedere Palace, depository of the largest collection of paintings by the artist, among them, world famous icons such as “The kiss” and “Judith”.

To better understand what Klimt supposed for later art, the Belvedere opens on March 22, “Klimt is not the end”, with the focus on the period after 1918, the year Gustav Klimt, Egon Schiele, Koloman Moser died. and Otto Wagner.

And in Villa Klimt, the mansion where Klimt had his workshop from 1911 until his death, will be analyzed from May on the theft, looting and destruction that was part of his work during Nazism. (February 5, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
