CHAVISM CONSOLIDATES ITS MUNICIPAL HEGEMONY IN THE ABSENCE OF THE OPPOSITION

Caracas / On Sunday, United Socialist Party of Venezuela (PSUV) consolidated its municipal hegemony in local elections to which the bulk of the opposition did not appear, considering that there were no minimum guarantees for a fair process.

Going ahead of the National Electoral Council, President Nicolás Maduro announced during the celebration of the results the victory by Chavism in more than 300 of the 335 municipalities.

Opposition candidates who did appear complained about irregularities throughout the country throughout the day.

EFE could see how the government party asked for the vote with powerful loudspeakers in the polling stations, something prohibited by law.

The ruling Chavism won the victory in two of the five municipalities that are part of the Gran Caracas and in almost all the capitals of the states in the country.

The opposition, for its part, managed to conserve three of the five municipalities of the capital and the city of San Cristóbal, capital in the state of Táchira in western Venezuela.

Marcel Gascón reported from Caracas to EFE Agency. (December 11, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
