JUNQUERAS AND THREE FORMERS REGIONAL MINISTERS ACCEPT ARTICLE 155 IN CATALONIA AND THEY ASK THEIR RELEASE TO SUPREME COURT

Barcelona / The former vice president of the Generalitat Oriol Junqueras and the three imprisoned former ERC regional ministers ask the Supreme Court (TS) that they “accepted and accept” article 155 of the Constitution “in the terms authorized by the Senate and it was approved by Council of Ministers” and ask their release to participate in the Catalan electoral campaign.

This Tuesday, the defense of the former regional ministers, members from political party ERC, has presented a brief before Supreme Court Judge Pablo Llarena, who is investigating the regional government stopped by rebellion, after having taken up the case.

In that brief, they ask they were summoned to testify and were release, arguing that they have the right to participate in the 21D campaign without their imprisonment “improperly stigmatizing their political program.”

In the brief, to which EFE has had access, the defense asks the magistrate to take into account that the four are on the ERC lists for the upcoming regional elections.

The four insist that they “accepted and accept” the application of that article of the Constitution “in the terms authorized by the Senate and approved by Council of Ministers.”

The appeal clarifies that they have done so “from the deepest political and legal discrepancy” and that “they do not renounce their political convictions”.

He also says that they frame his project in “a broad, progressive and extensive reading” of the Constitution that, “through negotiation and dialogue, allows citizens to be placed in the hands of the decision on the future of Catalonia.

The brief highlights that the investigated Oriol Junqueras, Carles Mundó, Dolors Bassa and Raül Romeva came to testify before the National Court “already as former regional ministers”, despite “legitimately and democratically holding the status of members of the Government of Catalonia.

The lawyers rule out that there is a risk of the investigators escaping, taking into account that they appeared before the National High Court when they were summoned. (November 28, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
