RAJOY APPEALS TO UNITY IN PALENCIA

Palencia / The President of the Government, Mariano Rajoy, has appealed today to the unity of all Spaniards as the best ‘recipe’ to overcome the country’s challenges and has said that this is what he believes he has done to leave behind the recent economic crisis.

Rajoy has called this joint effort during his speech in Palencia in the presentation of the activities planned for the European Year of Cultural Heritage 2018 in the Provincial Council where he stressed the social and economic significance of the cultural heritage in Spain.

The President of the Government considered cultural heritage as an “indissoluble link” between Spaniards and one of the most valuable assets in Europe and recalled that Spain is after Italy and China the country in the world with the most number of world heritage assets.

The President of the Government was accompanied by the one of the Autonomous Community of Castile and Leon, Juan Vicente Herrera, who underlined “the important and ample cultural territory” of Palencia, crossed from east to west by the French Way of St. James “, which crosses in Frómista with the Canal de Castilla.

Palencia – he recalled – had the first of the general studies in the thirteenth century, germ of the Spanish higher education.

The preservation of all cultural heritage requires, Herrera recalled, a great effort of public resources, “not sufficiently valued in a financing system centered almost exclusively on the population factor”, like the current one.

The Autonomous Community of Castilla y León has 1,200 declared assets of cultural interest, 23,000 inventoried sites, and more than 300,000 personal property of sacred art.

After making public the events that are going to be celebrated, Mariano Rajoy visited the Cathedral of Palencia known as “La Bella Desconocida” and whose restoration is included in the 1.5 percent cultural aid program. (February 13, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
