New York / It has been spent five centuries for a painting painted by Leonardo da Vinci to reach a price that has become the record in an auction. It is Salvator Mundi, one of twenty paintings that the Italian artist painted.
It went through many hands, some of them noble, like three English kings, until it was bought by a Russian billionaire.
The painting was auctioned by the Christie’s house for 450 million dollars, well above the 100 million that it had been calculated.
It is still unknown who the buyer is. The agent that represented him maintained an intense bid with a rival teammate until a convincing blow of 30 million dollars of difference sunk his counterpart.
The painting, according to Christie’s, is the only da Vinci’s work that is in private hands. It spent many years in anonymity because it was believed that it was painted by one of his disciples, until in 2011 the authorship of the Italian was confirmed in 2011.
Christie’s took it to an auction of contemporary art, completely out of Renaissance times and it was the star of the day.
There was a huge acrylic by Andy Warhol in the shade, which sold for more than 70 million dollars.
