THE WORST OF THE STORM ANA IS ALREADY OVER FOR SPAIN

Madrid /The first great Atlantic storm named Ana has begun to withdraw from the peninsula but it has left a fisherman missing when he was working in Mallorca waters and it has complicated air and sea communications as well as causing hundreds of minor incidents without harm to people.

The weather forecast points to an improvement in the situation and in this regard, the spokeswoman of the State Meteorological Agency (Aemet), Delia Gutiérrez, has told EFE that “the worst of the storm is over”, although it will not be until the last hours today when it is over.

The strong winds in the last hours have hit hard on Palma de Mallorca (Balearic Islands) where the emergency services continue the search for a fisherman of cane dragged to the sea in Santa Ponça, on the southwest coast of Majorca, and ask for a lot of caution before rough sea, which has meant the closure of the ports of Formentera and Ciutadella.

Wind gusts between 140/145 kilometres have been felt strongly in communities in the north of the peninsula, such as the Basque Country and Santander, where there have been numerous falls of trees and branches and flooding in homes and premises.

On the other hand, in Galicia, one of the areas hardest hit by the first major autumn weather, more than 300 incidents have occurred, especially in the province of A Coruña, where up to 109 have been counted.

Also, the displacement of Ana to European latitudes has caused the cancellation of 50 European flights in ten Spanish airports as a result of bad weather.

According to sources from Aena, the most affected airport is El Prat de Barcelona with twenty-one flights cancelled, followed by Adolfo Suárez Madrid-Barajas with eight cancellations, Alicante (4), Bilbao (4), Ibiza (4), Palma de Mallorca (3), Malaga (2), Santiago de Compostela (2), Fuerteventura (1) and Santander (1).

The port of Algeciras (Cádiz) has resumed the maritime lines with Ceuta and Tangier-Med (Morocco) although the port of Tarifa (Cádiz) continues closed since Sunday night. (December 11, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
