3 BILLION TRIPS IN THE CHINESE NEW YEAR

The world’s most crowded travel season, Chinese New Year, the most important holiday in China kicks off today as hundreds of millions of people come back to their homes to reunite with their families.

In some cases, it is the only time in the year in which families are fully reunited and thus the number of trips expected in these days is around 3 billion trips between today and February 21, according to official data.

Figure is growing every year and this 2017 is a 2,2 per percent higher, China’s National Development and Reform Commission spokesperson Zhao Chenxin, explained in a press conference.

The majority of trips will be on road, 2.5 billion, but for long distances, trains are still preferred and some 356 million people will travel in this mode of transport, as expected authorities.

By plane, there will be 58,3 million trips, while there will be 43,5 million trips during this feast, known as Spring Festival, by boat.

Today travellers began to overcrowd train stations in Beijing, bursting with luggage and gifts to bring home for the lunar new year celebrations which in 2017 will welcome to a new animal of the Chinese horoscope, in this case, the rooster.

Last year, the year of the monkey, will be left behind after the night of January 27, when fireworks will illuminate every corner of the country.
