Paris / At least four people have died in a knife attack carried out against security agents at the central police headquarters in Paris, a union representative said on Thursday.
The regional secretary of Alliance Police Nationale, Loïc Travers, said the suspect, an admin worker with over 20 years of experience, was shot dead by police at the scene.
The suspect began the assault within his own office before venturing out into other areas of the police headquarters, according to Travers.
At the time of the attack, which took place at around 1 pm local time (11 GMT), police units were fully active, Travers said.
The motive behind the incident remains unknown.
“Paris is mourning its family this afternoon after this appalling attack. The toll is heavy, several police officers have lost their lives,” tweeted the city’s mayor, Anne Hidalgo. “In my name and in those of Parisians, my first thoughts are with the families and those close to the victims.”
The authorities have closed the bridges linking the Ile de la Cité, where the police headquarters are located not far from Notre Dame Cathedral, to mainland Paris.
The nearby metro station has also been shut.
People who are not linked to the ongoing investigation into the attach were evacuated from the police headquarters.
Minister of the interior, Christophe Castaner, was at the scene of the ongoing operation, while President Emmanuel Macron was expected to arrive. (October 3, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
