5000 Moroccans enter Ceuta, Spain, illegally on Monday

Ceuta / Madrid / Tangier / The Government Delegation in Ceuta reported tonight (for Monday, May 17) that the number of Moroccan immigrants who have achieved to enter the city illegally throughout the day amounts to 5,000 people.

Government sources have informed EFE that the count that is being carried out indicates that some 1,500 of them may be minors and that the largest number of entries has been registered between 4:30 p.m. and 7:00 p.m., bordering the border breakwater of the Tarajal beach.

The illegal migratory pressure has been constant throughout the entire day and has even set a record, surpassing the entry into the Canary Islands of the 2,188 illegal in 58 boats or “cayucos”, which was registered between Saturday 7 and Sunday 8 November 2020.

Spain strengthens the breakwaters and the border and surveillance in the city of Ceuta

The Coordination Center (CECOR) of Ceuta, made up of the General Administration of the State and the Autonomous City, has agreed tonight that the Guardia Civil reinforce its presence on the border, breakwaters and on the border perimeter.

Likewise, a special device has been created to control all “sensitive” points in the city and maintain order in the streets and several Army units have begun, on the same Monday night, to collaborate in control tasks from the streets of Ceuta.

A local journalist from Ceuta told EFE that “it is something never seen before, they come from all over the region, from Castillejos, from Rincón, from Tetuán. And they enter without any control, neither on the Moroccan side nor on the Spanish side ”, he specified, before adding that the entries are taking place through the two border points of Ceuta, the one from the west (Beliunes) and the one from the south (Castillejos).

Spain will return the illegals, while Morocco is silent

Spain will return “to their place of origin” immigrants who have arrived in Ceuta irregularly in the last hours, as stated tonight by the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Arancha González Laya, who assured that, in fact, they are already proceeding to that return.

The Moroccan authorities, for their part, are silent. When contacted by EFE, neither the Ministry of the Interior nor the Ministry of Foreign Affairs spoke about the reasons for this massive arrival of immigrants, while the country’s media are profusely collecting information from Spain.

Morocco’s last known statements were made on 8 May, when the Moroccan government protested to Spain and warned that it should not ‘minimise the serious impact’ of the crisis between the two countries caused by the hospitalisation in Logroño of the Polisario Front leader, Brahim Ghali.

After raising its protest at the reception of Brahim Ghali, Morocco stressed that it took “note” of the decision of the Spanish authorities “not to inform their Moroccan counterparts” and added that the explanation given by Madrid about the reception for humanitarian reasons “doesn’t justify the maneuvers plotted behind the backs of a partner and a neighbour ”.
