72,500 spectators applaud at social parade at sambadrome of Rio

Rio de Janeiro / A parade dedicated to Xangó, the Afro-Brazilian deity representing Justice and who called for an end to impunity and discrimination against minorities, shook the sambadrome of Rio de Janeiro on Monday and is the favourite to the best title of this year’s carnival.

The presentation of the Salgueiro samba school dedicated to the “god who brought justice from Africa to Brazil” surprised by its sticky samba, intoned by the audience along with the dancers, and by the splendour and colour of costumes and allegorical floats.

But what most excited the 72,500 spectators of the sambadrome were the references to the end of crimes such as corruption, money laundering and the abuses of politicians, in a country shaken in recent years by several scandals of this type.

The last of the luxurious allegorical floats of the school of the Tijuca district, representing the triumph of Xangó, carried victorious and criminal police agents locked in cages, and was applauded by applause as it passed through the 700 meters of the avenue track. Marquis of Sapucaí.

At the end of the parade, carrying their respective flags, activists from groups that defend minorities, such as homosexuals, women, blacks and Indians, called for an end to all discrimination.

Salgueiro, fourth of the seven groups that showed up between Sunday night and early Monday morning, is part of the 14 schools of the so-called Rio de Janeiro Special Group, whose parades are considered the world’s greatest open-air show and constitute the main attraction of the carioca carnival.

Each of these schools, composed of up to 5,000 members, including dancers, musicians and outstanding personalities, has between 65 and 75 minutes to cross the 700 meters of the sambadrome track while the jurors qualify criteria such as creativity, harmony, costumes or composition.

The qualifications of the jurors are read and added on Ash Wednesday, when the carnival ends and the new champion school in Rio de Janeiro is known. (March 4, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
