90 percent support allows Abdelfatah al-Sisi to rule Egypt until 2024

Cairo / The Egyptian president, Abdelfatah al-Sisi, assured the constitutional referendum held on April 20, 21 and 22 will go down in the history of the Arab country, after 88.8% of the voters supported the amendments which allow him extend his mandate.

On his official Facebook page, Al-Sisi greeted the Egyptians who “have dazzled the world with their national awareness of the challenges facing our dear Egypt” right now.

“The wonderful scene that the Egyptians created with their usual intelligence when they participated in the vote on the constitutional amendments and exercised their political and constitutional right, is registered with pride on the annals of our nation’s history”, the president said.

Shortly before, the National Electoral Authority announced that 88.8% of the Egyptians who participated in the referendum supported the constitutional reform, compared to 11.17% who opposed it.

Participation in the referendum was 27,193,593 million voters, 44.33% of the more than 61 million people called to the polls, according to the president of the National Electoral Authority, Lashin Ibrahim.

The results were announced almost 24 hours after the polls closed after three days of voting in Egypt and 48 hours after it concluded outside the country for Egyptians living outside the country.

Today, Al-Sisi spoke of the referendum for first time, which it has been interpreted in some way as a consultation on his person, since the amendments include changes that will allow him to extend his current mandate until 2024 and opt for a third term later.

The constitutional reform was processed expeditiously by the Egyptian parliament in the past two months, after a group of deputies favorable to the president presented a proposal to the House in early February.

On April 16, the parliamentarians gave final approval to the amendments and the referendum was convened for 19, 20 and 21 April at the embassies and consulates, and a day later in Egypt. (April 23, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
