A CHINESE CITY ANNOUNCES A “UNIQUE DOG POLICY”

Beijing / The Chinese city of Huangshi (centre) announced that, starting next year, it will restrict the possession of pets to one dog per family, according to the economic news website Caixin.

According to local authorities, the measure seeks to “protect the safety and health of citizens”, since in the city there have been several cases of dogs that have attacked humans.

Also, the new regulations will prohibit having as pets dogs taller than 45 centimetres or races considered in China “ferocious” as bulldogs or Molossians.

This isn’t the first Chinese city to take restrictive measures in canine matters: the capital of the south-eastern province of Hunan, Changsha, introduced similar regulations this year.

Other important locations such as Chengdu (centre) and Hangzhou (east) have opted to restrict the possession of dogs to a short list of allowed breeds.

The Asian country is conducting a campaign against the “irresponsible behaviour” of pet owners.

Although in China pet owners must vaccinate and pay an annual license that can cost more than 2,000 yuan (288 dollars, 252 euros), many of them do not register their animals, which often leads to their being slaughtered by authorities.

Despite this, the pet industry is on the rise in China: a report published in early November by the specialized website Goumin said that, in 2018, only in relation to dogs and cats spending will grow by 27% to reach 170,000 million yuan (24,511 million dollars, 21,423 million euros).
