A paradisiac island in the center of the tensions between Iran and the USA

Ormuz (Iran) / The Iranian island of Ormuz, also known for its nuance of colors as the rainbow island, is a paradisiacal place located at a troubled point, center of the current tensions between Iran and the United States.

Located in the Persian Gulf, right in the strategic Strait of Hormuz, it has an original nature of great tourist interest, mainly because of the diversity of the 72 colors that decorate its orography of layers of volcanic sediment and salt.

With a total of 42 square kilometers, it receives annually around 50,000 tourists, who are encouraged to visit its coasts, valleys, caves and mountains of fantasy, although the current situation can seriously harm their economy.

Hosein Deirestaní, the executive director of the travel agency Fardis, told Efe that the population of Ormuz, with 7,000 inhabitants, is worried and continually “keeps track” of the news that appear in the media and on social networks.

“Everyone wants to know what the new US military vessels have come to do to the Persian Gulf, although from the islands there is no strange movement,” Deirestani said.

The US has announced in recent weeks the shipment to the Persian Gulf of the amphibious assault ship USS Arlington, Patriot missiles, the aircraft carrier USS Abraham Lincoln and bombers.

This deployment is part of its strategy to put pressure on Iran, a country that imposed new sanctions, including oil exports, after unilaterally withdrawing from the historic nuclear agreement reached in 2015 between Tehran and six major powers.

Iran threatens to close the Strait of Hormuz

Iranian authorities have threatened, meanwhile, to close the Strait of Hormuz, one of the most strategic international shipping routes in the world between Iran and Oman, for which crosses much of the world’s oil.

For this reason, the island of Hormuz, in the middle of the strait, is once again a strategic point, something that the Portuguese recognized centuries ago when they built a fortress there, from which they were expelled by the Persian troops in 1622.

The Portuguese fortress is one of the places visited by tourists, next to the rainbow valley, the salt cave, the snowy mountains or the turtle beach, where the range of colors ranges from white and yellow, to red and purple.

Its natural beauty, in addition to attracting tourists to the island, also serves for the beauty products industry.

Ormuz is an almost virgin island, without hotels, although the tourist can stay in the houses of some of its residents, and with communication by boat from the coastal city of Bandar Abas and from the neighboring island of Qeshm.

Of the 50,000 tourists who visit the island each year, only about 2,000 or 3,000 are foreigners, although, according to Deirestaní, this figure was increasing in recent months because the sharp devaluation of the Iranian currency has made this destination very cheap for the foreigners.

Now, due to the high temperatures, it is low season in the Persian Gulf islands, so it is difficult to evaluate the impact that the tug-of-war between Iran and the US will have on the tourism sector.  (May 17, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
