A SERIAL KILLER OF DOMESTIC RABBITS IN THE FRENCH BRITTANY

Paris / A serial killer of domestic rabbits, who follows the same pattern when it comes to perpetrating their massacres, has sown the alarm in the north of the French region of Brittany, especially among its retirees.

In the quiet Breton village of Minihy-Tréguier (1,320 inhabitants), the Gendarmerie has opened an investigation to locate an individual responsible for “a series of cruel acts against domestic rabbits,” according to authorities.

Around 100 rabbits which belonged to a dozen owners have been beaten to death in the last six months in that town and others in the surrounding area.

“It’s an odious and regrettable act which is causing a real psychosis,” admits the mayor of the town, Jean-Yves Fenvarc’h, in a statement to EFE.

“The people of our municipality are afraid of finding him in the house, we do not know if he is armed. I am also worried”, he confesses.

In the words of the mayor, the aggressor kidnaps and savagely beat the animals inside the homes and then leave their bodies at the door of the owners.

In addition, the mysterious murderer takes advantage of the fact that a large part of the residents “are elderly people, mostly retired people”.

Fenvarc’h thinks the suspect “must know the area well, because at times he has intervened during the day, waiting in hiding for the owners to leave to act”.

One of his victims was the L’Hévéder couple. Eugène and Marie-Françoise, aged 80 and 77, tell EFE their experience with an aggressor that shows an apparent predilection for the pets of this couple, as it turns out to be the house where he has performed most times.

“It’s already the fourth time, this is already a catastrophe. The other day we left home at 9 o’clock in the morning, before we left we gave them food and came back around 11 o’clock, that’s when we found them all dead. I do not have one left”, says Eugène, who suspects that the author has accomplices.

“There are several, I do not think this can be done by just one,” he says.

The man, who is “dejected”, has been raising rabbits for 55 years and says he had never had to go through something similar. “We wonder who can do something like that,” he laments.

The suspect uses particularly brutal methods before delivering his final blows to the animals: trampling them and shaking them to finally leave their remains at the doors of the homes.

The authorities calculate that the aggressor “has acted up to 15 times”, the last one last Tuesday.

The Gendarmerie, which has deployed a special device, is still in an initial phase of the investigation.

One of the few indications that it has is that “it was seen of furtive way in a residential garden with a raincoat and a hat, before giving itself to the flight”, according to the mayor.

The person who saw him and who almost became the heroine of the place is Sylvie Corlouer, who raises her rabbits in the nearby town of Langoat. Corlouer was about to unmask the individual last Thursday: “I caught him around nine thirty in the morning, but he had time to escape,” he explained to “Ouest France.”

She also figures in the long blacklist of the “butcher”. He realized in summer when one rabbit after another, up to six, were disappearing, including two females whose offspring, in the absence of mothers, also died.

The field of action of the suspect seems to be expanding as the same facts have been detected in three other bordering municipalities of Minihy-Tréguier: the aforementioned Langoat, La Roche-Derrien and Coatreven.

The mayor of La Roche-Derrien, Jean-Louis Even, received a warning from the Gendarmerie last Tuesday. At first, he thought it was a joke, but soon he reacted and decided to alert his fellow citizens about the situation.

“There has been at least one case in our municipality. The truth is that I can’t understand how one can do this to rabbits”, Even told the “Ouest-France”. (October 30, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
