Beijing / Chinese President Xi Jinping has opened the 19th Communist Party Congress with a speech of almost three-and-half hours, highlighting the arrival of “a new era” for Chinese socialism, after taking 60 million people out of poverty.
2,200 delegates attending the congress of the CCP interrupted several times with applause the intervention by Chinese leader in which he has decided to continue with the economic reforms to continue attracting foreign investment.
Xi has reviewed the achievements of the five years since the Congress in 2012 that appointed him secretary general of the party.
He talked about continued and stable economic growth in China, the strengthening of the armed forces and China’s growing presence abroad at all levels.
He has opted for an environmentally friendly growth model and has stressed its policy of “zero tolerance” with corruption, where 1.4 million officials have been punished in recent years.
The Chinese leader, who according to international human rights organizations has led the worst campaign since the 1989 Tiananmen crackdown, has warned that he will continue his fight against subversion, terrorism, separatism or religious extremism.
The ultimate goal – he has proclaimed- is to make China “a great socialist and modern country” by the middle of the century. (October 18, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
