ABOUT 100,000 PEOPLE EVACUATED AND 59,000 PASSENGERS AFFECTED BY AGUNG VOLCANO IN BALI

Jakarta/ Volcanic eruptions of Agung on the island of Bali since Saturday and the high potential for anticipating a major eruption today caused the closure of the Ngurah Rai international airport and affected tens of thousands of tourists and residents, official sources said.

The director of information for the National Agency of Management of Disasters, Sutopo Purwo Nugroho, estimates that the number of evacuees from the eastern Karangasem district, where the volcano is located, could increase to 100,000 today.

Nugroho said at a press conference that the volcano continues to expel lava and ash continuously, which will cause the crater to overflow, and warned that “there are possibilities of a major eruption.”

For its part, the operator of Ngurah Rai, PT Angkasa Pura, estimated that the closure of the aerodrome, which began this morning and will last 24 hours, has affected 445 flights and about 59,000 passengers.

Transport ministry announced in September an evacuation protocol for tourists that could help the hundreds of people trapped in Bali leave the island in buses and ferries to airports on neighboring islands.

The Center for Volcanology and Mitigation of Geological Hazards (CVMPG) raised this morning the eruption alert level from three to four, the maximum, and increased the safety zone to a radius of up to 10 kilometers around the crater.

The authorities have recommended the use of masks after the successive eruptions of ash, which has caused a cloud of up to 4000 meters high.

Nugroho also warned of the existence of lahars, as are named sediment and water flows that are mobilized from the slopes of the volcano.

Authorities say the island is safe except for the danger zone of the volcano, located in the east and in the Karangasem district and far from most tourist attractions.

It is the first magmatic eruption of the volcano since 1963, when the eruptions lasted almost a year and killed more than 1,100 people, although experts ruled out an equally strong eruption.
