AEMET WARNS OF A HEAT WAVE WITH MAXIMUMS OF UP TO 40 DEGREES

Madrid / An episode of high temperatures, probably the first heat wave this summer, will affect from next Wednesday, August 1, and until the end of the week to almost the entire peninsula, with peaks of maximum temperatures of 40 degrees or more in many autonomous regions.

This situation is the result of the conditions of atmospheric stability in a large part of the country together with the strong insolation typical of these dates and the entry of warm air of African origin, the  State Meteorological Agency (Aemet) reports in a statement.

Although the rise in temperatures will occur gradually, from Wednesday it will be accentuated in the western half and on Thursday in the northern third.

In the central and southwest area, the episode will be long-lasting and will most likely exceed 40 degreees in much of the interior of the southwest -starting on Wednesday- and in points of the central and inner peninsula area since Thursday.

In the interior of the north of the peninsula, the 35 degrees will be exceeded in large areas starting on Thursday, reaching even 40 degrees in the Ebro valley and in the interior of southern Galicia.

In the rest of the peninsula and the Balearic Islands is likely to reach or exceed 35 degrees from Friday and Saturday, also affecting other areas such as the Cantabrian where these values are unsual.

Regarding the minimum temperatures, the Aemet states that they will also be high in large areas, especially in the southern half and central peninsular area where they will not fall below 20-25 degrees.

At the moment, it is most likely that the Canary Islands are left out of this situation.

From Sunday 5 and Monday 6 August, and even with high uncertainty, it is possible that a drop in temperatures will begin, starting in the north-west of the peninsula. (July 30, 2018, EFE/PracticaEspañol)
