Los Angeles (USA) / “Roma”, by Mexican Alfonso Cuaron, made history today by becoming the first work in Spanish to get the nomination for best Oscar film, and added a total of ten nominations, the same as “The Favorite” by Yorgos Lanthimos, the rivals to beat at the gala on 24 February.
The statuette for best film will play “BlacKkKlansman”, “Black Panther”, “Bohemian Rhapsody”, “The Favorite”, “Green Book”, “Vice”, “Rome” and “A star is born”.
In the case of “Black Panther” is the first superhero film which gets this recognition.
Cuaron, in his second nomination as best film-maker (which turned out to be the winner with “Gravity”), will see the faces with Spike Lee, Pawel Pawlikowski, Yorgos Lanthimos and Adam McKay.
“Roma”, after its impressive record today, owns a large part of the ballots to succeed as the best non-English speaking film, a space where he will deal with “Capernaum” (Lebanon), “Cold War” (Poland), “Never look Away “(Germany) and” Shoplifters “(Japan).
On the other hand, the Mexican Yalitza Aparicio will fight for the Oscar for the best actress, her mate Marina de Tavira will do the same in the field of best supporting actress.
The Spanish accent will also play a leading role in the field of best actor thanks to the presence of Viggo Mortensen.
And Spain doesn’t leave without nominations thanks to the irruption of “Madre”, Rodrigo Sorogoyen, in the category of best short film.
