American soprano Jessye Norman dies at 74

Madrid / The American soprano Jessye Norman, one of the best lyric voices of the second half of the last century, has died in a hospital in New York at age 74 as a result of complications in an old spinal cord injury, reported in a statement your family.

 

 
The artist, winner of 4 of the 15 Grammys to which she was nominated and holder of the National Medal of the Arts of the Government of her country, has died, according to different American media, at Mount Sinay St.Luke hospital in New York due to a septic shock and a multi-organ failure resulting from the complications of a spinal cord injury that she suffered in 2015.

“We are very proud of Jessye’s musical achievements and the inspiration that was for audiences around the world and will continue to be a source of joy,” says Norman’s family, who had turned 74 on September 15.

Also, they add, they are especially proud of her humanitarian efforts on issues such as hunger, the homeless or the education of young people in art and culture.

In 2003, the singer founded the Jessye Norman School of the Arts in her hometown, Augusta (Georgia), to promote education in the various arts of young people without means.

The African-American performer was at the beginning of her career one of the few black singers who played important roles in the operatic repertoire, which she played in the great halls of the world, from La Scala to the Metropolitan, where she sang more than 80 titles since she debuted in 1983 with “Las Troyanas”, by Berlioz.

It was in the best theatres in the world “Carmen” and “Aida”, she sang the Wagnerian repertoire and crossed stylistic borders to give a new life to Duke Ellington and other great jazz.

Norman’s first beginnings

Norman was born at the time of segregationism and her first contact with music was in the church, where she went with her mother and grandmother, both pianists, and her father, singer.

After obtaining a scholarship to study music at Howard University, in Washington DC, and after perfecting her training at the Peabody Conservatory, University of Michigan, she debuted in 1969 in Berlin assuming the role of Elisabeth in “Tannhäuser” by Wagner

“The palace of sound”, as described by The New York Times, was the owner of a huge voice, which reached every corner of the auditorium and opened new dimensions to the viewer.

She had an honorary doctorate from several universities, including Juilliard, Harvard and Yale, as well as being a member of the British Royal Academy of Music and commander of the French Order of Arts and Letters.

She performed in Spain several times

Owner of a beautiful colour in the voice and musical sensibility, Norman acted in Spain on several occasions, including the one that starred in 1999 at the Royal Theatre, where audience stood up.

With the same repertoire, she did it later in Barcelona, she reviewed some of the most beloved pieces for her, from Richard Strauss to Ernest Chausson through Duke Ellington.

The recital was surrounded by controversy because the Executive Committee of the theater board considered that what had been paid was excessive, 22 million pesetas at the time, and because some tickets of 50,000 pesetas were put up for sale, which gave the right to dinner since the name of the people or companies that acquired them will appear in the hand program.
