Are you willing to pay $10 to go through the most curved street in the world by car in less meters?: You will have to do it if you want to go through Lombard Street (San Francisco) in 2020

San Francisco / Lombard Street, the street of San Francisco (California, USA) dubbed as the “most sinuous in the world” for its eight curves in only 125 meters, is going to charge $10 to make the route by car, according to the councilor of the City Hall Catherine Stefani.

Lombard Street is going to join the red bridge of Golden Gate in San Francisco which also charges $8 per vehicle to cross over it.

Around two million visitors come to this popular tourist attraction every year and an average of 17,000 tourists come there per day during the summer weekends.

Neighbours complain about noise and other things

The measure is designed to reduce traffic and tourist pressure on the residents of the area as there are residences on each side of Lombard Street and through it access to homes and garages.

The neighbours complain about the noise and the lack of civism of some tourists, who climb the roofs of houses and “urinate in the front doors”.

The rate of 10 dollars will be applied in 2020

The rate agreed by the City Council and approved by 11 votes in favour and none against will start to be applied in 2020 and will be charged only to rolling vehicles with advance booking to visit the section of the curves.

This part of Lombard, in addition to the curves, has a steep slope and can only be lowered.

Most of the residents of the city avoid it, since for them it is more practical and quick to take alternative routes and their use, according to the City Council, is limited almost exclusively to tourists and residents. (April 23, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
