ASTEROID FLORENCE WILL BE NEARLY BUT IT WILL NOT IMPACT WITH THE EARTH

The asteroid Florence, which will pass near Earth on September 1 without danger of impact and which is four to nine kilometers in diameter, represents a valuable opportunity for specialists to observe and analyze it, experts said today National University Autonomous.

Florence is the greater asteroid observed in the history of the American Space Agency (NASA).

“For science it is important to know its spectral properties (spectrum of light and colors), we can establish how much it measures and how it is its structure,” said researcher Karina Cervantes of the Institute of Geophysics of the UNAM, at a press conference.

The proximity will allow to investigates its real size and aspects such as “its topography, rotation, texture and a more accurate determination of its orbital trajectory,” explained Cervantes.

The researcher recalled that it is a body almost as large as the one that generated the crater of Chicxulub (which was 10 kilometers in diameter), and that collided with Earth 65 million years ago, in the north of what it is now the Peninsula Of Yucatan, it caused the extinction of innumerable species of plants and animals, including dinosaurs.

The asteroid will touch the earth’s orbit at a speed of 13.53 kilometers per second and scientists will be able to observe it with telescopes and radars, said researcher Guadalupe Cordero, also from the Institute of Geophysics.

On Earth, tons of space material fall daily, considered asteroids of many sizes, said.

“Many asteroids have moved closer, but they have been smaller,” Lamb explained.

He clarified that Florence is within “potentially dangerous” asteroids because “its dimensions are greater than 140 meters and its minimum approach distance is less than 19.5 times the distance between Earth and the Moon.”

The asteroid proceeds from beyond Neptune and will pass seven million kilometers away, that it is 18.38 times the distance between Earth and Moon. (August 31, 2017, EFE / Practice Spanish)
