Islamabad / At least 65 people were killed and 26 injured on Thursday due to a massive explosion of a gas cylinder – being used by passengers to cook breakfast – on board a train in southern Pakistan.
The explosion took place at 6.30 am near the city of Rahim Yar Khan and resulted in three coaches of the train catching fire, a source from the ministry of railways told EFE on the condition of anonymity.
At least 65 people were killed while the 26 injured have been shifted to nearby hospitals, the national emergency service Rescue 1122 said in a statement.
Railways Minister Sheikh Rasheed told local broadcaster Geo that many passengers jumped from train to escape the fire.
“Most deaths occurred from people jumping off the train,” he said.
Rescue operations were in progress after the deployment of personnel from both civil and military establishment, with the latter sending troops and doctors to the accident site, the Inter-Services Public Relations (communications wing of the military) said in a statement.
The train, which was traveling between Karachi and Rawalpindi, was carrying a large number of pilgrims who were headed to Lahore to attend a religious festival.
Carrying and using gas cylinders is banned inside Pakistani trains, but they are often used to prepare food by some passengers in long journeys.
Train accidents are not uncommon in the country, which has a railway network dating back to the British colonial times (before 1947).
In July this year, 20 people were killed and 80 injured when a passenger train collided with a goods train in southern Pakistan.
In Nov. 2015, 20 people died and around 100 were injured in the southwestern province of Balochistan when a train derailed. (October 31, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
