Two dead, one of Thai origin and another French, and fourteen injured, six of them in a state of absolute gravity, are the initial victims of the attack perpetrated on the Christmas market in Strasbourg by a 29-year-old man who is booked by police for common crime and radicalization Islamist. Police is searching for him inside and outside France, while the city is “absolute mourning.”
The attack has been strongly condemned by the presidents of the European Commission, Jean Claude Juncker and Parliament, Antonio Tajani highlighting the symbolism of Strasbourg as a city of peace and democracy for being the seat of the European Parliament, as well as by the heads of state and of Government of the majority of European nations, including Spain.
King Felipe VI through the official profile of the Casa Real on Twitter expressed the solidarity of Spain with the families of the victims and the wounded, with the people and with the authorities of France: “The union of Europe, the word of your Parliament in Strasbourg, will always conquer terror”, he said.
The killing took place a few minutes before the closing of the Christmas market, at around 7.50pm local time (18.50 GMT). The investigation will have to determine how it could access the interior of the market enclosure with weapons, as the security device provides for the registration of all persons who access, explained the mayor Roland Ries.
After the events, the attacker had a confrontation with a police brigade with which he crossed in a bicycle lane, and it was there where he could be injured, informed the mayor.
One of the main clues in which the more than 350 members of the mobilized law enforcement work is that he took refuge in his neighbourhood of Neudorf, in the south of Strasbourg.
He confirmed today the schools of the city are closed, that in any case they will welcome students, and the Christmas market, which was already the object of a failed attempt of attack in the year 2000, won’t be opened.
On the other hand, the German Police has intensified the controls in several border points with France and the controls are being carried out also in the public transport. (December 12, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
