Autism: the hours without noise in the Seville Fair

Seville (Spain) / The Seville April Fair is a celebration with 173 years of history which is characterized by its animation and bustle, whose maximum exponent is Calle del Infierno (Street of hell), where 400 attractions are concentrated and which on Monday for the first time in its history, have been a few hours without noise.

The absence of noise for four hours in this area of 125,000 square meters, a delight for any citizen, has been especially welcomed by the kids with autism spectrum and their families, who usually can’t go to the fair as they are stunned by the thunderous music of the attractions.

An initiative of the Seville Association of Asperger’s Syndrome

To make this truce possible, the City Council took an initiative of the Asociación Sevillana de Síndrome de Asperger y Trastornos del Espectro Autista and negotiated with the association that brings together the attractions, which accepted the proposal without problems, as explained to EFE sources municipal.

To do this, it was agreed to download the music to a pleasant volume for four hours on Monday – it usually sounds at 60 decibels maximum – enough to cancel the mechanical sound of the attractions, which also annoys autistic people.

The music on Calle del Infierno, name earned by the infernal sound of the attractions, is the same for all since 2008, and the fairgrounds take the only signal provided by the City Council and only emit their own sounds, such as sirens of beginning and end of the attractions.

Own stand

In addition to the hours without noise, the City Council provided a stand for the families of the association to eat before going to ride the attractions and attend a special show of the Circus Sensations, also with less noise than usual.

Some of those affected by the autistic spectrum disorder have highlighted to EFE the satisfaction that was supposed to be able to enjoy the fair without the habitual startle of the deafening noise, which until now prevented them from being more than five minutes in the Calle del Infierno.

The relatives of these people trust that this day without noise becomes commonplace. (May 8, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
