BEES WITHOUT CROWN FOR A MOLECULE

A certain molecule in the diet makes some bees be workers and other queens, say now experts from the University of Nanjing (China).

It is the molecule regulating the gene expression of plants.

These molecules are very present in the so-called bee bread, a mixture of pollen and essential honey in the diet of worker bees and experts say they delay the development of larvae and keep their ovaries inactive.

Scientists now know that honey bread contains much higher levels of these molecules, known as microRNAS, than royal jelly.

Experts have found that these molecules delay the development of bees and also the fruit fly, according to PLOS Genetics.

Queen bees, however, feed only on royal jelly, substance secreted by bees guardians or young worker bees.

The molecule is the minimum unit of a substance with all its chemical properties that can be divided, formed by two or more atoms. The atom is indivisible.(September 1,  2017, EFE / Practica Español)
