BRAZIL CLOSES ITS CARNIVAL WITH MORE SOCIAL AND POLITICAL CRITICISM

Brazil closed its most critical and vindicatory carnival in the Sambadrome of Rio de Janeiro in the early hours of the morning with a scream torn against the evils afflicting the country, from violence to corruption, without forgetting intolerance and discrimination.

For the first time on the Avenida del Marqués de Sapucaí, there were scenes of violence that replicated the reality that millions of people live in the favelas of Rio de Janeiro, by the hand of Beija-Flor, one of the favorite schools of this edition and the last of the six that paraded this morning.

With a satire that pretended to be a cry of “alert” against the social, political and religious model of the country, its assembly, “Monster is the one who does not love”, reproduced extreme situations that shook the public that packed the temple of the samba, with capacity for more than 70,000 people.

A woman holding the body of a dead policeman, evoking Michelangelo’s Pieta, closed a parade in which children were seen in their coffins, shot; parents carrying the bodies of their wounded children, young people pointing their victims in the head with weapons and “arrastroes” (multiple assaults) like those that have been repeated in the last days in the south zone of Rio.

“Oh Patria Amada, dónde estás” was the chorus of the samba that accompanied this ruthless criticism of Brazil that has included politicians and corrupt businessmen, preachers of all religions and a denunciation against discrimination.

Criticisms against the president of Brazil, Michel Temer, and his neoliberal reforms, especially the new labor framework, and against the mayor of Rio, the evangelical Marcelo Crivella, who does not hide that he considers this sinful celebration and has taken advantage of the biggest party in Brazil to leave the country.

And although the last night in Sapucaí marks the end of the carnival in Brazil, the party will not be complete until the winning school is announced, tomorrow Wednesday. (February 13, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
