Byzantine coins from 5th century found in Bulgaria

Sofia / Bulgarian archaeologists found 56 gold and bronze coins dating back to the Eastern Roman Emperor Theodosius II (401-450) during a dig in Devnya, local authorities have said.

Sixteen gold coins have been discovered so far, almost all of them bearing the face of Theodosius II, except for one that shows his wife, Aelia Eudocia, and another Valentinian III, the emperor’s cousin.

The haul was found in the last four days near a local hospital, in an area that until now had not been “sufficiently explored,” a spokesperson for the council said.

“We suppose that the coins were hidden during an attack against the city by the Huns, who destroyed Marcianopolis (the ancient city where Devnya lies today) and this treasure was buried until now,” Hristo Kuzov, the head of the team that made the find, told Efe.

The coins were unearthed during an archaeological dig close to the Mosaic Museum in Devnya, some 400 kilometers from the capital Sofia.

The coins feature a cross on the reverse.

Another 40 bronze coins were also discovered.

Local authorities have not ruled out the possibility that more treasures will be discovered in the area.

The archaeological team believes the coins, which were found in a ceramic box, belonged to a high-ranking soldier or a rich businessman.

Bronze coins were used in daily transactions, while gold ones were kept in special places, saved for big spending occasions.

In 1929, in the same spot, 100,000 silver coins from the Mark Anthony period (43-33 BC) were found.

Marcianopolis, named in the 2nd century in honor of Marciana, the sister of Emperor Trajan, was an important economic and religious hub of the Roman Empire, and later the Byzantine Empire. (September 30, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
