Candidate for mayor and high school student with 19 years

He turned 19 last January, Juan del Canto makes his Bachillerato studies compatible in a Zamora highschool in the mornings with the electoral campaign in his town, Villalazán, in the evenings. He is the youngest mayor candidate for Castilla y León and one of the most precocious in Spain.

Less than a month ago he knew what it was like to vote for the first time in an election and on May 26 he will have the opportunity to vote for himself in a candidacy with possibilities of winning due to the balance of forces existing in Villalazán, the Zamorano municipality in which he lives, is an example of the “Empty Spain”.

Although he has never been affiliated with any political party, not even now that he is presented by the PP, this young Zamorano has confessed to EFE that he had always wanted to be politics, which he had previously channeled as a student delegate in his class at the Rio Duero Highschool in Zamora.

“It seems that young people always go in the back positions”

Juan del Canto explained that, although professors and students “know very well” their political vocation because “I have always been making war as a delegate”, they have been surprised that they go to the top of the municipal list because “it seems that young people always go in the back seats.”

When he commented this to his parents, with those who lives and whom helps in the family animal husbandry, that he was going to run for mayor, the first reaction was “do not get into trouble, who sends us, that we do not make a living on this,”. However, when they saw that he was going ahead with his aspiration they supported him totally.

Del Canto is a candidate for mayor of Villalazán for the PP, a formation that in the last elections was left twelve votes to achieve the mayoralty of this municipality in the region of Tierra del Vino of 278 inhabitants, located 15 kilometers from the capital of Zamora .

The problem of rural depopulation

Since this young man was born, in the year 2000, the town has lost 30 percent of its population, so Juan del Canto has criticized that the current municipal corporation expects others to solve the problem of depopulation insted of doing it themselves.

In this regard, he has advocated not stand still because “although they sell us that the villages have an expiration date, I think they don’t. But, if they had it, the more the City Council moves, the longer the date will be”.

In his list, he is not the youngest, since there is another member of his villa who is still 18 years old and half of all that make up the candidacy are “new blood”, as they are under thirty years.

“We can not allow that they mortgage a future that belongs to us”, said this young candidate for mayor, who has confessed to be “in love” with his people, even if theyhad hurt him with things like closing schools or the store of groceries in the village.

His lack of experience is expected to compensate with the enthusiasm and desire to do things for the people who squandered his candidacy and with the support offered by people with management experience.

For this reason, he has asked for an opportunity to face the “policy of immobility that is almost conservation and little else, and that does not go anywhere”, which, in his opinion, is what has been exercised by the current mayor, María Isabel Perero (Ahora Decide), who has been in office for 32 years and returns as candidate, although this time as number two in the list.
