Carlos Fuentes (novelists and politics)

The voice of the Mexican writer Carlos Fuentes when in 2008 he said he would like to be an exorcist of the ills in Mexico, which he once more portrays with critical acuity in his novel La voluntad y fortuna, in a radiography of a bloody country that faces the difficult challenge of violence.

“Novelists would like to be exorcists of the evils of society and they just end up being prophets,” Carlos Fuentes (Panamá, 1928 – Ciudad de Mexico, 2012) said in an interview with EFE in Madrid, on the occasion of the presentation of his work, published by Alfaguara. In this novel, he demonstrated his critical capacity, convinced that the function of the writer is not to “celebrate” nor to “acclaim”.

Like Paris in Balzac or Dublin in Joyce, Mexico City is omnipresent in the work of this prolific author. This tradition began more than fifty years ago, when Fuentes published La región más transparente. Then the young writer raised a “great novel about the Mexican capital,” which had five million inhabitants, then. Today, the city has reached 20 million, has registered “a very large quantitative and qualitative change”, which prompted the Cervantes Prize to write this new novel that “reflects another country and another society.”

Read transcription of the  MP3:

“Novelists would like to be exorcists of the evils of society and we just end up being prophets.” The novel begins with Joshua saying “I am the thirtyth head of the week and the first of this day.” And what we see now in Mexico is severed heads, headless bodies watered by the battles between drug dealers throughout the country, so my character is actually a real life character. ”
