CARNIVOROUS PLANTS ARE THREATENED

Mexico / Carnivorous plants have a peculiar operation and are surrounded by myths created from popular wisdom although the reality is that they are threatened and accuse the destruction of their habitat.

The science teacher Wendy Juárez from the Institute of Biology of the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM) told EFE the entire group of insectivores is threatened and is usually extracted from the field and then marketed irregularly.

The destruction of its habitat is another problem for this species that usually grows in swampy places where the human being “imposes roads at will” causing loss of water, therefore, leaves in its wake dryness and death of many of them.

Another common problem is the garbage that sometimes remains scattered by the field because of the visit in the days of field generating pollution in the habitat, explained

That is why the laboratory from the Institute of Biology of the UNAM is even resorting to the cloning of this species to try to repopulate it. Apart from that, one can not deny its surviving nature.

According to Juarez, “they have adapted to the deficiency, mainly nitrogen”, by means of insidious and seductive tactics. The main one is the use of the so-called traps, modified leaves to trap insects

Beauty is one of the weapons that these plants use to trap their prey and obtain nitrogen, making insects irresistible through color and aroma.

“The nitrogen for these plants is essential for their growth and especially for flowering, but we must not forget that they are plants and carry out photosynthesis, that way they get the carbohydrates they need,” the professor added.

What can not happen is that they eat human or animal flesh that, according to the biologist, turns out to be the main myth that surrounds these species, mainly due to misinformation and also in part to the iconic 1960s horror movie The small store of horrors.

Far from these fanciful attributes, these bizarre plants can be useful to regulate the number of flies in a place, sometimes being used “as an insect control system”. (May 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
