Casillas after being benched for La Roja: "I am not immortal"

Real Madrid´s and Spanish national team captain, goalkeeper Iker Casillas, said the "smooth transition" Spain coach Vicente Del Bosque talked about after the game against Luxembourg, in which Casillas was benched, will be "good," as he is not immortal.

“In a publicity event Wednesday at the Adolfo Suarez Madrid- Barajas airport, Casillas said, “I think it will be a good transition, it is clear that I will not be here forever, I´m not immortal”.

“Everyone has to know the right time to leave the national team, but I see myself (today) in a good shape to help my country and play in the France EURO d 2016, and fight for the title, which will be tough as there are other strong teams,” he added.

Del Bosque´s decision to bench him and field Manchester United´s David de Gea did not surprise him, while emphasizing the good relationship between himself and the Spanish coach.

“The decision was not a surprise, I have a good relationship with del Bosque, I understand the matter because they talked about a smooth transition. I don´t feel frustrated”, Casillas said.

He also asserted that “it is the law of life, I am 33 years old and will not be able to play soccer for as long as I want, and there are other players eager to prove themselves, such as David (de Gea) and Kiko (Casilla)”.

After his crucial goal-causing mistake in Spain´s loss against Slovakia, he did harbor thoughts about retiring on the international level, but the goalie clarified that it was only a “fleeting thought”.

“After a game you lose, things pass through your head; you talk loudly as if you had a younger brother who has made a mistake, and you tell him you´re going to kill him. It´s clear you won´t really kill him though”, he added.

“The same thing happens with the national team. My idea is to keep on playing as long as the coach decides I should play; so I have to play well for my team. My idea is to go on and stay for the longest time possible”, he concluded.
