Catalonia: it begins the trial for disobedience which can mean the disqualification of the Catalan president

Barcelona / On Monday, the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia judges the president of the Generalitat, Quim Torra, for disobeying the order of the Electoral Board to withdraw ties from public buildings in the campaign of April 28, a case that can cost up to two years of disqualification.

The Catalan president, who thought he didn’t attend to trial when he initially signaled for a day that coincided with a plenary session in the Parliament, arrived at the Palau de Justicia surrounded by several of his counselors, both from JxCat and ERC, as well as by the leaders of the sovereign entities, which have called for a focus on their support.

Torra, the third consecutive Catalan president persecuted by the justice for his role in the independence process, his disqualification is played in the trial for the exercise of functions of government or public office, a penalty that could separate him from the Generalitat once the Judgment be firm.

The Prosecutor’s Office asks for a year and eight months of disqualification for the president of the Generalitat for any public office at local, regional, state or European level and a fine of 30,000 euros, a sentence that Vox, popular accusation in the case, raises up to two years in jail and a penalty of 72,000 euros.

Although the Superior Court of Justice of Catalonia (TSJC) condemns the Catalan president for disobedience Torra would not be removed from the Government until the Supreme Court ratifies it.

The average high court to resolve appeals is usually not less than the nine months, which would delay until at least next year an eventual disqualification of the Catalan president. If elections had been called before the conviction was final, nothing would prevent him from running as a candidate.

On the occasion of his statement as investigated, last May, Torra admitted before Judge Carlos Ramos that he disobeyed the order to withdraw ties, considering it “illegal”, because it was due to a “higher mandate” of citizenship. (November 18, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
