Cats don’t always land on their feet

Neither are more births during full moon nor cats, animals with seven lives, always land on their feet. Nails and hair don’t grow after having died, or men don’t think about sex every seven seconds. If that were not enough, it isn’t possible to learn anything while we are sleeping

Daniel Closa, PhD in Biology and researcher of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC in Spanish language), has spoiled some of those false beliefs on his book “100 Myths of Science”, where he has collected hundreds of assumed theories and facts of scientific nature that are no more than rumours without any basis.

Thus, nails and hair of dead people don’t grow again, our hair cannot be lightened because of a scare nor men think about sex every seven seconds. As he has proven on his book, most of the time we don’t have to be scientists to ruin myths, we can just sit down and think about it.

Legends of brain and mind

Additionally, there are several legends about brain and mind. The most common is the belief that we use only a 10% of our brain. This is an unjustified statement, because when we test brain activity with machines, we can see that all areas are working. Also, we aren’t able to learn anything while we are sleeping, even if Aldous Huxley affirmed it on his book “A Happy World”. As well, men don’t think about sex every seven seconds because we don’t have any technology to prove it.

Animal myths

There are several myths about animalslIn relation to the animal world, it is false that neither ostriches bury their heads nor cats always land on their feet. Another common belief concerns to camels, which don’t keep water but fat on their humps.

Talking about snakes, they don’t react to the sound of the charmer’s flute, even if it doesn’t look like that. They just react to the movement of people because they are deaf.

Sink or toilet water doesn’t spin to one or other direction depending on the hemisphere where we are. Although we have seen it on hundreds of movies, it is false as the author emphasises on his book.

However, this myth has a scientific basis related to Coriolis force, which is a real phenomenon that we can only perceive when the distant covered is about hundreds of metres. So, whirlpools and whirlwinds spin differently depending on the hemisphere, but we could never see this effect in our baths.

The Earth isn’t closest to the Sun in summer

Another common myth is the belief that our planet is nearer the Sun in summer than in winter, and even some schoolteacher teach it in the school, as the author explains. We just need to sit down and think about it to spoil this theory. If that were true, how could be possible to have summer in one hemisphere and winter in the other?

Also, neither indigo colour exists nor rainbow has seven tonalities because it can have all the colours. In addition, water cycle is half a lie, due to we have to believe that the water is always the same, flowing through the planet. However, plants destroy most of it during the photosynthesis.

Although all Chinese people jump at the same time, the earthly orbit will not be changed, even if Mao insisted on it. It will be need a force from the space to modify the orbit of our planet and China is in the Earth.
