CHINA AND THE IDEOLOGICAL CONTROL IN THE UNIVERSITY CAMPUSES

Beijing / The Chinese Ministry of Education will install “political and ideological work centres” in 20 universities to promote the teaching of socialism on campuses.

The official newspaper Global Times reports that China aims to promote “the advantage of socialism with Chinese characteristics to cultivate talent, strengthen the leadership and construction of the Communist Party of China (CCP), and encourage political and ideological work on campus”.

For this, the Ministry of Education has validated the applications of twenty Chinese universities, including six in Beijing and one in Shanghai.

These universities will work in coordination with the government department to “boost the work and report any problems” that arise.

Among the functions of these centres will be the preparation of studies on political and ideological work in the campuses, consultancy services for universities and education offices of “all levels”, as well as exchanges between the different centres in the country.

This initiative comes two months after the communist regime arrested a dozen Marxist students and labour activists in a series of police raids on university campuses in Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen and Guangzhou.

Also in May of last year, a teacher was fired from Zhongnan University in the centre of the country, after being denounced for issuing ideologically “incorrect” comments on the constitutional reform drafted by Chinese President Xi Jinping to stay on track. the power beyond 2023.

The Chinese government already announced in early 2017 its intention to strengthen its control over the academic sector by tightening ideological inspections on campuses to ensure that the line set by the CCP is followed. (January 11, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
