China imposes tariffs on 128 US products

Beijing / China announced Monday that it has imposed trade tariffs on 128 products from the United States, in response to the decision announced by the US government last month to impose tariffs on Chinese steel and aluminum imports.

A 15-percent tariff has been applied to a set of 120 US imports, including fruits, nuts, and wine, while another 25 percent has been levied on pork and related products, according to the Ministry of Commerce.

The measure, which went into effect on Monday, is a response to Washington’s decision to impose a 25-percent tariff on steel products and an extra 15 percent on aluminum imports from China.

In a separate statement, the Chinese Ministry of Commerce also urged the US to back down on its new measures on Chinese steel and aluminum imports, which Beijing said breach the rules of the World Trade Organization (WTO), and return to its usual bilateral exchange agreements.

China had already announced on March 23 that it would impose these tariffs if the US went ahead with its plans to levy more tax on its steel and aluminum products.

However, Beijing always maintained that it did not want a trade war with the US and warned the White House not to open “a Pandora’s box“. (April 2, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
