China’s coronavirus death toll in climbs to 2,592, infected to 77,150

Beijing / The Chinese health authorities said Monday another 150 people had died of the novel coronavirus, taking the death toll in the country to 2,592, while 409 new infections have been detected, pushing the total to 77,150.

Up until midnight (16.00 GMT on Sunday), 9,915 serious cases had been registered, while 24,734 people had been discharged, the National Health Commission said in its daily report.

The commission added that to date, it had followed up with 635,531 patients who had been in close contact with the infected, of which 97,481 were still under observation.

Of these, 3,434 are suspected cases of the virus called SARS-CoV-2.

In Hubei province, the epicenter of the outbreak where the situation is much more serious, 398 new infections and 149 deaths were recorded, meaning only 11 new cases were detected in the rest of the country and one new death was reported in the southern island of Hainan.

Of the 398 cases in Hubei, 348 were recorded in its capital while 1,439 patients were discharged from hospital on Sunday.

Among the confirmed cases, there were 9,430 severe ones in Hubei and 8,329 in Wuhan.

Deaths in the province have now risen to 2,495 – 1,987 in Wuhan – and the number of infected to 64,287, more than 46,000 of them in the capital, which completed a month under quarantine Sunday.

Although about 30 countries have identified COVID-19 cases, China accounts for about 99 percent of those infected.

On Feb. 11, the World Health Organization officially named the disease COVID-19, while the virus which causes it has been called SARS-CoV-2 (changed from its provisional name 2019-nCoV) by the International Committee on Taxonomy of Viruses.

The organization said “CO” stands for “corona,” “VI” for “virus, “D” for “disease” and “-19” for “2019” – as the outbreak was first detected Dec. 31.

The symptoms of the new disease are in many cases similar to those of a cold, but may be accompanied by fever and fatigue, dry cough and dyspnea (shortness of breath).  (February 24, 2020, EFE/PracticaEspañol)
