CHINESE PRESIDENT IN A STATE TRAVEL IN SPAIN

Madrid / Chinese President Xi Jinping opened his State visit to Spain at the Palacio de la Zarzuela with a meeting in Felipe VI’s office and a dinner offered by the King and the Queen to him and his wife, Peng Liyuan.

Before entering the private dining room of La Zarzuela, Mr. Felipe and Mrs. Letizia, who will officially receive their guests today with a solemn ceremony of welcome to Spain organized at the Palacio Real, appeared with Xi and his wife before the numerous graphic media present at the Audience Room, where the four, smiling, exchanged some comments in a relaxed tone.

In the gift giving which preceded the dinner, the King and the Queen presented their guests with a dedicated photographic portrait of Mr. Felipe and Mrs. Letizia, the canvas “Abstract Floating Nature” by the Segovian painter Alberto Reguera, a soccer ball signed by the players of the Spanish national football team and the official shirt printed with the name of the Chinese president and the number 8.

On the other hand, Xi and his wife gave their hosts an ornamental ceramic plate with the motif “Viento en popa”, a traditional Suzhou embroidery which recreates a photograph of the Kings with their daughters and an album with songs performed by the first Chinese lady, Peng Liyuan, celebrated in her country as a soprano.

THE VISIT AGENDA

Xi Jinping’s visit to Spain is the first state visit by a Chinese president in 13 years, after which Hu Jintao starred in 2005, with the aim of improving the bilateral and strategic relationship with Spain and strengthen the Chinese alliance with the EU in international affairs.

Besides, today Xi Jinping will attend the Senate, where he will deliver an intervention in the old hall of sessions before the deputies and senators gathered in a solemn session of the Cortes Generales in the former plenary hall, after being distinguished with the medals of both Chambers.

Mrs. Letizia will accompany Peng Liyuan on a visit to the Royal Theatre while her husband completes the planned program in the Senate, which will be followed by an interview with the chief executive, Pedro Sanchez, at the Moncloa, where both will preside over an agreement on taxation, employment, culture, research and trade, in this case to facilitate Spanish exports of pork and table grapes.

The agenda of this Wednesday will close with the gala dinner that the King and the Queen will offer in honour of Xi and his wife at the Royal Palace, which will be attended by dozens of guests from both countries and during which the two heads of State will speak.

Xi Jinping assumed the presidency of China in March 2013, replacing Hu Jintao, and the plenary session of the National People’s Assembly approved on March 11 a constitutional amendment which eliminates the maximum limit of two terms of five consecutive years for the Headquarters of the State and allows him to stand for re-election indefinitely.
