CLONING OF TWO MONKEYS IN CHINA ANGERS ANIMAL LOVERS

The cloning for the first time of two genetically identical monkeys with the same method used to create the Dolly sheep in 1996 has angered the animal NGO PETA, one of the largest in the world, which has described it as a “horror show”.

The experiment was carried out at the Institute of Neuroscience of the Chinese Academy of Sciences in Shanghai (China), according to the journal Cell.

The primates, two long tailed macaques, were born according to this publication eight weeks ago the first and one week and three days later, the second.

The two primate clones, created from tissue cells of an adult macaque and called Zhong Zhong and Hua Hua, are alive and healthy, one of the Chinese researchers said in a conference call.

The researcher justified animal cloning in the research needs of brain diseases, cancer or metabolic disorders.

“It is now possible to create research populations of identical and personalized monkeys,” he said.

People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA) organization has not seen it that, in a statement, has indicated:

“Cloning is a spectacle of terror: a loss of life, time and money” and the suffering that such experiments cause “is unimaginable”.

For PETA, the two monkey clones “represent misery and death on a huge scale”.

It alluded to the high failure rate of cloning (which is 90 percent) and demanded the end of all these experiments:

“Clone monkeys – according to PETA – is the last ‘Frankenscience’. (January 25, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
