Costa wins Portugal re-election, to continue coalition

By Cynthia de Benito / Lisbon / Portugal’s prime minister on Sunday won his second term in office, although his Socialist Party (PS) failed to secure an outright majority.

Antonio Costa’s PS won 36.6 percent of the vote, ahead of the center-right Social Democratic Party (PSD) with 28 percent.

“The Portuguese liked the Geringonça (Contraption)” coalition, Costa told the crowd, adding that he would continue with it.

In this year’s elections marred by the high abstention of 45.5 percent, the Socialists substantially improved its seats from 86 to 106, just 10 short of the absolute majority.

Costa will now have to enter negotiations with allies in order to obtain the support that will allow him to form a government, the same that happened to his current term in office after the 2015 polls.

One option will be to re-negotiate with the left-wing parties that he has had a conflicted relationship with since 2015 such as the Marxist Left Bloc (BE) with the Unitary Democratic Coalition (CDU), or the alliance of the Portuguese Communist Party (PCP) and The Greens (PEV).

Another option is to unite with the People-Animals-Nature (PAN) Party, which went from receiving 1.39 percent of the votes in 2015 to 3.28 percent on Sunday, allowing the party four seats, up from one.

Three new parties also gained seats. The far-right Chega – marking the first time the party has entered parliament after the arrival of democracy to Portugal, as well as the left-wing Liberal Initiative, and Livre each won one seat.

Despite the growth of diversity in parliament, the Socialist party started celebrations as soon as the exit polls were published.

“Historical defeat” is a phrase repeated by leaders of the PS, who were pleased with the fall of the PSD, which Sunday obtained 27.9 percent – its lowest result since 1983 – and lost 12 seats, although its leader, Rui Rio, said the result was similar to that of four years ago.

The democratic CDS-PP had worse luck than the PSD after getting just 4.3 percent of the vote, going from 18 to five seats. The party lost its leader, Assunção Cristas, who announced her resignation, and will convene another meeting to elect their new president.

The slow count concluded after midnight, pending the results of Lisbon and Porto, which kept the mystery of 20 key seats until the end to determine if the 10.8 million voters would give the absolute majority to the Socialists. (October 7, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
