Do you really know the American writer and journalist Tom Wolfe was born in 1931 in Richmond (Virginia), he resided in New York since 1962 when he began to carve out a name in journalism and the novel, or used expressions such as “chico bien”, “izquierda exquisita”or “lo que hay que tener”?

Do you know that Tom Wolfe died on Monday in New York at the age of 87, who celebrated his birthday on March 2, due to pneumonia and that the news of his death has opened space on the front pages of the most important newspapers in the world as well as in the radio and television news programs?

Do you know he was considered the father of New Journalism, a hybrid genre that, according to him, newspapers never liked, and that the topics of American politics did not interest him because the presidents of the United States, as he said, only assume the roles that the era imposes on them?

And do you know that he was the author of books like “The bonfire of vanities”, “The rogue journalism and other items”, “The good genre”, “A Man in Full”, “Bloody Miami” or “I am Charlotte Simmons” in which portrays the American society?

Do you really know Wolfe boasted of being the only writer in New York who voted for George W. Bush and who came to conclude that young university students in the United States only have sex in their brains?

Thomas Kennerly Wolfe Jr., his real name, was an elegant transgressor of American journalism helped by the accurate use of written and spoken language, to which he dedicated his life, after abandoning the aspiration to be a baseball player after being rejected by the New York Giants.

Tom Wolfe worked for media such as “The Washington Post,” “Esquire and The New York Herald Tribune”, among others.

“I have been a journalist, and I still consider myself a journalist who has written some novels,” he told the Spanish newspaper ABC in 2013.

Tom Wolfe was always careful to maintain a dandy image, starched collars, gold pin on his tie, Italian handkerchiefs, socks and white suits, and garish booties.

“He is not just an American icon, he had an enormous international reputation,” acknowledged the WSJ, his literary agent, who described him as one of the “most modest and noble” people he met.

Wolfe, who is survived by his wife, Sheila, and their children Alexandra and Tommy, has left a file, which includes 10,000 original letters and drafts, in the hands of the New York Public Library (NYPL) which acquired it in 2013 for about 2,15 million dollars. (May 16, 2018, EFE/Practica Español)
