DRAWINGS BY GIACOMETTI ARE FOUND IN AN ANTIQUE SHOP IN LONDON

Drawings attributed to the Swiss sculptor and painter Alberto Giacometti have been found among the dusty objects in an antique shop in Kensington, West London.

The works, which it believed these have been lost or sold, were among the inventory of London shop owner Eila Grahame, who died in 2010.

Six years after Grahame’s death, Cambridge-based betting house Cheffins was in charge of cleaning the premises and selling her personal collection.

The drawings, which are sketches in pencil of two faces and a nude of woman dated in 1947, took time to appear between the articles of Grahame and these required a later work to authenticate that these were work by the creator.

A committee of the Giacometti Foundation was in charge of studying the paintings and, finally, of including them in its reasoned catalog, where the works by the artist are documented.

Cheffins director Martin Millard noted that “these drawings have never before been shown to the public” and he therefore hopes that “these will be of interest to museums and galleries around the world and also to individual collectors.”

The paintings, worth between 40,000 and 60,000 pounds (44,400 and 66,000 euros), will be auctioned on October 12 at the bookmaker and proceeds from the sale will go to the UK Art Foundation.

So far one of the major sales of the Grahame collection has been a cork model of the Temple of the Sibyl in Tivoli, dating from the 18th century, which was sold last year for 53,000 pounds (58,830 euros). (August 12, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
