‘Duquesa de Alba’ by Goya comes back to its home of Liria

Madrid / The famous painting of the Duchess of Alba by Goya comes backs to the Liria Palace in Madrid, which will be open to the public from September 19.

Together with that painting, the portrait of the Countess of Miranda by Pantoja de la Cruz, and that of the Duchess of Alba by Ignacio Zuloaga, also returns.

All were lent to the Thyssen Museum for the exhibition “Balenciaga and Spanish painting,” according to the noble house in a note.

The Liria Palace opened its doors to the public in 1975, but until now it was only possible to visit the public one day a week -free-, in three small shifts of 15 people, which generated a waiting list of years.

The Madrid building, known as ‘the little brother of the Royal Palace’, was the principal residence of the deceased Duchess of Alba, Cayetana Fitz-James Stuart, and now it is also her son Carlos Fitz-James Stuart, XIX Duke of Alba.

During the visits, in which those interested will be able to see the rich historical legacy of the House of Alba, and for the first time dependencies such as the library, so far accessible only to researchers.

The library of the Liria Palace houses 18,000 volumes, including bibliographic and documentary jewels such as the famous ‘Alba Bible’, the first translated into Spanish, autograph documents by Christopher Columbus, letters from the Catholic Monarchs or the wills of Ferdinand the Catholic and Philip II.

The Liria Palace, built in the 18th century, contains the largest and most valuable part of the cultural heritage of the House of Alba, with important works of art from its private collection, one of the most important in the world with paintings by Goya, Velazquez, Rubens or Titian.

Two other palaces of the House of Alba, that of Dueñas in Seville and that of Monterrey in Salamanca, can also be visited. (September 10, 2019, EFE/Practica Español)
