EIGHT DEAD AND 93,000 HECTARES BURNED BY CALIFORNIA FIRES

Los Angeles (USA) / Nearly twenty fires in California, the most serious located near Yosemite National Park – which remains partially closed to the public – have claimed at least 8 deaths and have burned more than 93,000 hectares of land.

The Carr fire, located in the county of Shasta (about 400 kilometers north of San Francisco) and originated a week ago near the town of Redding (with about 92,000 inhabitants), is the deadliest of them all and has been charged the lives of six people, including a 70-year-old woman and two of her great-grandchildren, ages 5 and 4.

That fire has forced the evacuation of more than 38,000 people.

Carr fire, the most dangerous focus right now, has consumed more than 40,000 hectares of land and destroyed 723 residential buildings. That fire is contained in 20% right now and there are seven people missing in the area, according to data provided by the authorities.

The other two dead have been found near the flames of the Ferguson fire, now contained by 30%. One of them is a firefighter who died after being hit by a tree in Mariposa County, where his battalion has been trying to smother that fire for weeks.

The U.S. National Meteorological Service noted that “excessive heat, combined with low relative humidity and the presence of branches and dry grass, is causing these fires that present an explosive growth of fire.”

There are about 12,000 firefighters who are fighting the flames in California with the help of 800 agents from California National Guard.

In addition, there are hundreds of fire trucks involved in the tasks, some even displaced from the state of Florida.
