A row of white elephants -elephant is a national symbol in Thailand- paid their respects to deceased King Bhumibol Adulyadej in an event organized at Grand Royal Palace, that received monarch’s rests, in the old town.
The eleven pachyderms, together with their keepers, paid homage to deceased monarch before his portrait.
After, the group of elephants paraded to nearby statue of the pink elephant, made as gift for Bhumidol on his eighty-four anniversary.
Before retiring them to come back to stables in Ayutthaya, in the northern Bangkok and old capital of the kingdom, row of elephants offered a performance to people present.
A white elephant on a red background was in the national flag between 1855 and 1917.
Because of Rama IX’s death, an official mourning have been declared for a year, after which will be held coronation of his only male son and heir to the throne, prince Vajiralongkorn.
Bicameral Parliament still has to proclaim king to Vajiralongkorn, who has requested to delay act to share mourning with Thai people.
Without King, functions of regent are done by former Primer Minister Prem Tinsulanonda, who acceded to the office as president in the Privy Council of the monarch, as mandated of the Constitution.
