CYBER ATTACKS: THE WORST IS YET TO COME

Madrid/ Experts warn. In terms of cyber attacks between countries “the worst is yet to come”.

This is what the executive director of the cybersecurity consultancy K2, Bruce Goslin, defends, who adds that the operations attributed to Russia “are much more serious than most believe”.

In an enterview with Efe after participating in a day of the Atlantic Institute of Government in Madrid, Goslin warns that Russia “is already acting” facing the next elections in USA or the European elections of 2019″.

“It is the game of Vladimir Putin, a very cheap and effective way to sow confusion, uncertainty, to face population with each other and to support extreme candidates. An example is the tension is Italy”.

This consultant belives that in Italy the extremist parties “have won more followers because the Russians are supporting, facilitating the communication of their messages and encouraging more followers” with the ultimate goal of “promoting populism and that there is confrontation against the traditional political class”.

When he is asked about the evidence that proves his claims about Russian interventions, Golin says:

“It is not proven to go a judge. The physical evidence in this area are hard to find, but analyzing data traffic, behavior patterns, statements and political positions, all this set of things make it easy to understand”.

“They are not cyber attacks properly, but the use of social media to initiate and communicate certain messages that seek to generate caos, controversy and confrontation, to affect the democratic process”, he adds.

For the consultant, who resides in Madrid for two decades, “the worst is yet to come” in cyber attacks between countries, because they will nor only “increase in shor term”, but governments are also “behind” the advances of criminal organizations that sell tools to break computer systems.

“Every day there are thousand of attacks that we do not know” as ‘ransomeware’ (data hijacking and system crash) that several Spanish companies suffered last year. “They are not countries, but organizations that attack hospitals, local police, debt collectors, in several cities, waiting to collect the ransom”.

In addition, Goslim has warned about the impacts on the real economy that the rise of cyber attacks generates, due to “the increasing amount of black money collected by criminal organizations” with hacks, losses in taxes not collected and with the impact on prices for consumers due to the higher costs in companies”.
