EU, NATO AND USA POINT TO RUSSIA FOR ESPIONAGE AND ATTEMPTED GLOBAL CYBER ATTACKS

Brussels / The European Union (EU), USA and NATO charged against Russia after the Netherlands and the UK accused it of attempting to carry out cyber attacks against international organizations and, in particular, the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW), based in The Hague.

The United States also accused the seven alleged members of Russia’s military intelligence service (GRU) of cyber-hacking doping control companies in an attempt to undermine international efforts to expose the scandal of Russian athletes.

And the Netherlands announced that last April it expelled four officials from the Central Intelligence Department of Russia (GRU, in Russian) when preparing a cyber attack against the OPCW internet network.

The alleged agents, who were carrying 20,000 dollars and 20,000 euros in cash, had conducted explorations in person at the headquarters of that international organization, parked their vehicle near the building and opened the trunk to manipulate a “high-quality equipment” intended to pirate Wi-Fi connections remotely, according to the Dutch authorities.

The institutions of the European Union have “serious concerns” about the “aggressive act” of Moscow, said in a joint statement the president of the European Commission, Jean-Claude Juncker; the head of the Council of the EU, Donald Tusk, and the head of community diplomacy, Federica Mogherini.

NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg joined the cataclysm of high-level Western reactions and declared, on the other hand, that “Russia must stop its pattern of reckless behavior, including the use of force against its neighbours, the attempt of interference in electoral processes and generalized disinformation campaigns”.

Besides, the US Secretary of Defense, Jim Mattis, in the framework of a NATO ministerial meeting held in Brussels, described the alleged attack as the “last episode in a global pattern of reckless and irresponsible behavior on the part of Moscow.”

ACCUSATIONS OF THE UNITED KINGDOM AND THE NETHERLANDS

In a joint statement, the prime ministers of the Netherlands and the United Kingdom, Mark Rutte and Theresa May, respectively, indicated Russian military intelligence is developing unacceptable cyber operations directed against international organizations around the world.

Russia, for its part, denied it and Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zajárova said at a press conference from Moscow that the accusations leveled by the West against Russia respond to the fact that “espionage-mania is gaining momentum.”

When the alleged hacking attempt took place in The Hague, the OPCW was investigating, on the one hand, the poisoning, last March, in the British town of Salisbury of the Russian ex-spy Sergei Skripal and his daughter Yulia with the nerve agent “Novichok”.

The OPCW was preparing a fact-finding mission in Syria to investigate allegations of the alleged use of chemical weapons in an attack on civilians in the Syrian town of Duma, accused by the regime forces of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad of which Russia is allied.

US Justice identified the suspected hackers as Alexei Sergeyevich Morenets, Evgenii Mikhaylovich Serebriakov, Ivan Sergeyevich Yermakov, Artem Andreyevich Malyshev, Dmitriy Sergeyevich Badin, Oleg Mikhaylovich Sotnikov and Alexei Valeryevich Minin, all of them Russians.

The Netherlands reported that four of them Morenets, Serebriakov, Sotnikov and Minin are accused by this country of perpetrating cyber attacks against the Organization for the Prohibition of Arms (OPCW), based in The Hague, and that they were deported to Russia last April.
