EXPULSED FROM A MUNICIPAL SWIMMING POOL IN GRANADA FOR WEARING BURKINI

Granada (Spain) / The City Council of Granada investigates whether the concessionaire company of a municipal swimming pool incurred any illegality or committed a hate crime by asking two users to leave the area for wearing a full body swimsuit and stressed that the facilities allow the use of burkini.

The Councilor for Social Rights, Accessibility and Education of Granada, Jemina Sánchez, explained to journalists that the City Council has already requested a report from the company in charge of the facilities after the Association for Human Rights of Andalusia (Apdha) denounced yesterday the facts as discriminatory and Islamophobic behavior.

The Granada delegation of the Apdha explained that, last Sunday, Inacua’s staff, the company in charge of the pool of the sports center “Journalist Antonio Prieto”, requested two users wearing a full body swimsuit to leave the area with their children.

Sanchez has explained that the Consistory learned of the facts yesterday by social networks and did not receive the claim in writing until the last minute, a complaint filed by a witness and after which they opened the investigation.

“If we do not report or claim we are turning a blind eye and hatred is fed by our silence,” said the mayor, who has encouraged to report any discrimination and has detailed that they have requested in writing a report to the company, which will deliver this week with graphic documentation.

The City Council will collate this report with the claim and hopes to be able to contact those affected to fight against any “xenophobic, racist or discriminatory” attitude.

Sanchez has acknowledged that the City Council is concerned and has ensured that if there is any irregularity will be sanctioned to the company, since in the municipal pools is allowed to use the burkini, as recalled today in a circular that was already sent by a similar fact in September.

He has emphasized that “other clothes” that harm or endanger health, such as bathing in a dress or a similar garment that may involve risk with the purifiers, are not allowed.

“We work to clarify the facts and so that there is not the slightest doubt that attitudes that can generate hatred are not admitted,” said the councilor, who has also been in contact with Muslim communities to provide their suggestions on the matter. (November 8, 2017, EFE/Practica Español)
